Auburn Athletic Director John Cohen Signs Contract with Hugh Freeze

Auburn Announces Hiring of Hugh Freeze as New Football Coach

On November 29, 2022, Auburn University announced that it had hired Hugh Freeze to be the 31st head coach of the Auburn Tigers football team. His six-year contract will pay him an average of $6.5 million per year, according to ESPN.

Auburn athletic director John Cohen will sign the contract with Freeze with both eyes open, knowing the upside and the risk involved in hiring the former Ole Miss and Liberty coach.

Freeze was named the 31st head football coach in Auburn's 129-year history. With 12 years of experience as a head coach at the collegiate level, Freeze has quickly elevated the programs he has led.

In a statement, Freeze said, "I am honored and humbled to be the head football coach at Auburn University. I am excited to get to work with our student-athletes, coaches, and staff to build a championship program that will make our fans and alumni proud."

Cohen said in a statement, "Hugh Freeze is a proven winner with a track record of success at the highest level of college football. He is a great fit for Auburn, and I am confident that he will lead our football program to new heights."

Freeze's hiring comes after a thorough search process following the firing of Bryan Harsin. Auburn and Freeze agreed to a contract on Monday, making the former Ole Miss and Liberty coach the Tigers' new head coach.
