Sheila Jackson Lee, a Democrat from Texas who served as a leading voice for racial justice and progressive causes during her three terms in Congress, has died at the age of 74. Her family announced her passing on Friday, July 19, 2024, after a battle with cancer.

Lee, who was born Sheila Jackson on January 12, 1950, had a long and distinguished career in public service. She was elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 1990 and served there until 1994, when she was elected to Congress. She quickly rose to leadership positions, serving on the House Judiciary Committee and the House Committee on the Budget.

Lee was known for her outspoken advocacy for Black Americans and her work to promote economic and social justice. She was a vocal critic of police brutality and racial profiling, and she was a strong supporter of affirmative action and other programs aimed at addressing racial inequality.
