The Game of three halves was a football match played between Sunderland and Derby County on the 15th of April 1893. The match was played at Derby County's ground, the Baseball Ground, in front of a crowd of 14,000. Sunderland won the match 4-1.

The match was notable for being the first time that a football match had been played in three halves. The first half was played for 45 minutes, the second half for 35 minutes, and the third half for 30 minutes. This was due to the fact that the match was played on a very muddy pitch, and the players were finding it difficult to move around.

Despite the difficult conditions, the match was a highly entertaining one, with both teams playing attacking football. Sunderland took the lead in the first half, but Derby County equalised in the second half. Sunderland then scored two more goals in the third half to win the match.

The Game of three halves is considered to be one of the most important matches in the history of football. It helped to popularise the game and it also led to the introduction of the three-half system, which was used in football for many years.
