How to Remove Gel Polish Over Acrylic Nails

Buffing Away the Gel

If you have gel polish over your acrylic nails, you'll need to buff away the entire surface of the nail enhancement before you can remove the acrylics. This will help to break down the gel and make it easier to remove. Use a fine-grit nail file or buffer and gently buff the surface of the nails until all of the gel polish is removed.

Soaking in Acetone

Once the gel polish is removed, you can soak your nails in acetone to remove the acrylics. Acetone is a strong solvent that will break down the acrylic and make it easy to remove. You can either soak your nails in a bowl of acetone or use cotton balls soaked in acetone and wrap them around your nails. Cover the cotton balls with aluminum foil to help keep the acetone from evaporating. Wait for 10-30 minutes, or until the acrylic begins to soften.

Removing the Acrylics

Once the acrylic has softened, you can use a cuticle pusher or orange stick to gently push the acrylic off of your nails. Start at the cuticle and work your way down to the tip of the nail. If the acrylic is still difficult to remove, you can soak your nails in acetone for a few more minutes.

Finishing Up

Once all of the acrylic has been removed, wash your hands with soap and water. Apply cuticle oil to help moisturize your nails and cuticles.
